Second Stage of Developing Business
When you are “hooked” on your everyday business tasks, operational thinking, solving problems, and thinking hard 24/7 about how to develop your business further, you can get this weird feeling that this is all there is in your life, and your business has become you, and that business is you.
Suddenly you feel that you are only as good as your business. If you do well, you feel well and think that you can move mountains and solve any problem needed. But on the other hand, if you do wrong or have bad days at work, you feel bad about yourself, thinking you are no good, and maybe incapable of achieving something great.
Don’t blame yourself for that. Capitalism encourages this type of mindset. Every day, people get a massive amount of negative feedback on social media, saying you are only as good as how you can present yourself to others or how successful you are.
In the end, you get the same results. People feel bad about themselves because they are not as successful as the other stranger on social media. Poor self-esteem is a result of that.
To overcome this situation and destructive emotions, you need to rethink and look again at how you see things. I know, I had to learn that.
You are not your business. Your work position is not you. The product that I have developed and patented is not me, and it does not determine me. Getting great deals does not define me. You can still be a great person and feel great about yourself even if you are not as successful as your friends and colleagues around you or friends on social media.
You realize that your business path will be much easier because it will not take so much energy out of you. Yes, you can get your bad days and make bad decisions that may cost you much money. But those were just your actions with the best intentions that you have made, based on the best information and knowledge you had at that point.
Knowing you are trying your best at every moment is all you need. Good enough is enough. It doesn’t need to be perfect.
It takes time to realize that. It has to do with your open-mindedness and self-development. See in the following chapters how I needed to do more self-development to get more excellent business results.
Disappointments During Customers Rejecting My Offers
Once you establish your company and your main sales program, it is idyllic to expect immediate results and great sales. It is not like that by far. You must understand that running a small business needs to be flexible and quick in adjusting your game. It is essential for surviving. As much as you research and prepare yourself before you go out with your product, you must know that you will, in most cases, have to adjust your game and your offer. It is normal. Don’t have an illusion that you know your path to the goal you have set up. In most cases, you need to adjust your “sails.”
Going from a meeting to a meeting can be stressful. It is even more stressful and nerve-racking if meetings don’t go according to your plan. Imagine yourself going from an appointment to a meeting every day. It takes a lot out of you, both physically and mentally. If we add to this negative feedback by making no sales, it can get frustrating and disappointing. However, it would be best if you didn’t take it personally. It is not you that is rejected. It is your offer that is getting rejected. So, instead of thinking bady about yourself, you need to maintain your focus on your goal.
Instead of negative thinking when your proposals are getting rejected, you need to analyze why that is so, and what you need to adjust so that you’ll be more successful next time. Maybe it’s your product, and perhaps it is your marketing and sale strategy, or your communication skills, etc.
In my case, I needed to adjust business proposals and prices to be more competitive and get more sales.
It is also vital that you have a good mindset toward negative feedback. Yes, it can be frustrating and disappointing, if you look at it in that way. You can also look more favorable. The most valuable feedback that you will get is feedback in the field from your customers, by talking to them face-to-face. Yes, I understand it is nice when you hear good things from your customers. However, you must realize that from winning, nobody learned anything. The biggest learning lessons you will get in life and business are from your failure. Failure gives you a great retrospective on how you can do better next time and develop as a person or your products.
That is why you need to appreciate customer feedback. You never know how it will help you in the future.
That process got me to the point that I developed and patented a new product that significantly impacted IT hardware equipment, made significant sales in my country, and got many inquiries globally. So instead of thinking about the customer turning down my offer, I was rather thinking and focusing on how I would help resolve his problem. SOHO cabinets system is now unique in resolving and facing both technical and aesthetic problems that customers had in the IT market. You can see more about our patented products on our web page, monellpro.com.
Now see what the biggest mistake was that I had made at that stage of my business.
My Biggest Mistake in the First Third of Building My Business
First, marketing and sales effort began to show up. I was getting more and more inquiries and orders for my line of communication, server racks. Things began to open, and I was in a good drive. Customers started to believe in my products and my service. They got exactly what I was offering. We were making a sale because both parties were satisfied.
I was getting more and more orders. At that point, I was still doing everything practically by myself. When I had time, I focused on marketing and sales—preparing marketing materials, doing updates on the website, making phone calls, qualifying offers, and so on.
When I was booked with orders, I was still assembling racks and preparing them for customer takeover. That took a lot of time and energy out of me. At first, it was great that I was doing that, because it helped me to know my product from the inside out. But later, that same occupation with all tasks became an inhibitor for developing my business to the next level. So you can say that I was sabotaging myself of progress.
Since I was occupied with production, I didn’t have time for more important things like developing my company and my products. I suddenly lost my focus because I was too busy with production and ensuring deliveries to my customer. First, I thought it would not be a problem and managed to do it all. I was wrong. Sometimes it is hard to admit mistakes.
I was prolonging too much with recruitment of new staff. What was working for me at the start of my business was now turning back on me. Shuffling all tasks was not being of any benefit anymore. I was getting enough income to leave the production to another employee, which would give me enough time to focus on more important things. I was suddenly working in my company and not working on my company. Luckily, it didn’t damage my business too much.
Sill, if you can understand, for me at that point, it seemed like a logical thing too. But believe me, when you are in a situation and have this hard work drive and the personality of having difficulty trusting others, it is not so logical anymore.
It took me a long time to realize that and to change my mindset. It took my business to some sort of stagnation, which wasn’t necessarily all bad. Well, you can say I am more conservative, and that stagnation worked for me since we were still in recession at that point, and all moves needed to be especially careful.
Race to the next chapter and see how my other personal drivers affected me and my work.
Question Your Working Hard, Being Perfect, Being Strong Strategy When It Comes to Developing Business
For sure, you must have heard it already: Work hard, play hard. The sentence annoys me every time I hear it, yet it is still so popular today. When has enough stopped being good enough? Why just be accepted by others and yourself when you are perfect or doing things perfectly? Why do we always need to have control over things and be strong in every situation even if we are being torn apart inside?
These are just a few character traits that our society glorifies these days. We worship perfect, strong, hardworking people with excessive responsibility to things and people. Social media has contributed significantly to this.
Parents promote these qualities, mostly because they don’t want their children to fail in life. Not to blame them; they just want what is best for them.
It is better to work hard than to be lazy. It is better to be perfect than to be good enough. It is better to be and act strong all the time than to succumb to pressure. Don’t get me wrong. All these qualities can help you succeed if you are not making them compensate for your personal deficit....
